Canon 24-105 f4L Two vs Sigma 24-105 f4 ART?

Hi everybody,

I plan to invest to an 5D mark Four with a standard zoom lens but I'm hesitating between Catechism 24-105 f4L Two vs Sigma 24-105 f4 Art. Do you lot take experience with Sigma especially its AF performance? I read compatibility AF issues well-nigh 5d mk IV + some Sigma prime Art lenses .

I will utilise information technology mainly on events, weddings, portrait and would like to utilize the trunk's AF capabilities.

Thanks

Canon is newer, weather sealed, and Canon can't give yous the tertiary party excuse if something doesn't work with the lens on the camera. Plus you don't have to buy a USB dock for the lens...

I struggled with the same choice, but went with the Canon considering it's Catechism. It'due south quite sharp, and for the focal length, a decent weight.

But it mostly comes down to a 300 US dollar cost deviation.

how-do-you-do

I used to own 24-105f4 (canon) marker i lens

my body is canon 6d and i photograph events

I sold it and bought sigma 24-105 f4 dg fine art

Comparing the 2 lenses

  • Canon focuses faster
  • Paradigm quality is improve inthe sigma lens
  • I was getting quite 'soft images' from canon lens from 50+mm focus and this was frustrating
  • Sharpness is much better through all focus range in sigma

I did a focus calibration with my body and lens and didnot had any issues with focus. I am using the sigma for 2 years at present very reliable and solid lens

Without wanting to put a spanner in the works, I would say that any of the 24-105's volition practise a disservice to the 5DIV.

Personally, I'd lose a bit at the top stop and become for the Canon 24-70 f4, or even f2.eight if the budget can stretch.

Yes I have.

The Sigma has poor AF accuracy on the 5DIV - especially in low light. Equally the OP has stated he's looking to do 'wedding ceremony stuff' you can't recommend a lens that doesn't have reliable AF.

When I compared the Sigma to the Canon, the Sigma was definitely sharper in the centre, simply suffered from much more resolution fall off around the edges. It also didn't render colours as nicely for my personal preference.

On my 6D, I take compared three copies of Catechism 24-105 f4L with Sigma 24-105 and the Sigma is sharper than all of them peculiarly at the edges and corners. I also noticed amend contrast and more than saturated colours on the Sigma. I take been using Sigma for more than two years. I don't take focus problems with my 6D.

Recently Sigma has released a firmware update for their 24-105 so perchance they have fixed the issues with 5DIV.

odd that the Catechism 24 105 L marker Two gets a manner lower sharpness rating than the marker I on DXO... https://world wide web.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Canon-EF-24-70mm-F4L-IS-USM-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-Four-versus-EF24-105mm-f-4L-IS-USM-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-IV-versus-Canon-EF-24-105mm-F4L-IS-II-USM-on-Catechism-EOS-5DS-R__1074_1106_164_1106_1745_1009

From what I've seen the Sigma is quite a scrap sharper than either of the Canon's but has no weather sealing at all, and here in Africa we demand all the help nosotros can become from the elements.

I have the Sigma also and discover information technology abrupt throughout the range. I've compared it to the newly released Canon and I've found it more consistent in sharpness and the AF is a tad slower merely otherwise authentic regardless of lite. I've merely found i issue in that the outermost AF points on my 5Dmkiv focus hunt in low light when used with the Sigma but keeping in mind this at midnight looking downward a very barely lit walkway (in Venice). In one case I inverse to the center point, focused and recomposed (it was a wide angle shot) the focus was spot on.

I've personally had nothing merely good feel with Sigma'due south new lens line up with the 50A, 24-105A and 150-600S - all smash focus, once calibrated, and are sharp and provide a great experience in usage, ruggedness, reliability and consistency. I'thou looking at the 24-lxx ART next for a walkaround low light lens, after comparison with the Canon and Tamron versions of course.

There is merely i right way to utilise DxOMark's lens score, which is to write it prominently on a piece of toilet paper and affluent it down the loo. At that place are ii reasons why other treatments do non brand sense:

one) DxO never tells you lot how the score is weighed among the many information points they accept.
2) As far as we can tell, they but test i sample.

The role of the DxO website you should exist looking at is not the score, merely the raw measurement information that appears when you click on the other tabs. Different the score, this is really useful. If y'all cheque 24-105L I vs II this mode, yous volition come across that II is somewhat less abrupt at 70mm but is noticeably ameliorate at 24 and 105 ends.

If you actually want a 24-105, I'd lean towards the sigma art. I wasn't impressed with my copy of the canon v2 24-105. Non as sharp every bit my 24-70 f4 IS outside the centre. If you are ok with 24-70, the f4 IS is an uncommonly sharp lens

How is the sharpness of your 24-70 f4 at 50mm compared with 24-105? Both DxoMark and The Digital Picture reported it quite soft.

When the Catechism 24-105mm II came out I was able to examination two copies against two copies of the Sigma 24-105mm. A few observations:

  • Autofocus on the Canons was more precise, but the Sigma was proficient for the Art range and the f/iv maximum aperture meant that slight misfocuses did non consequence in an out of focus image. Overall a win for Canon.
  • The Sigmas were sharper over nearly of the frame at most focal lengths, especially at 105mm. The Catechism images looked like they had a soft filter and lacked micro contrast. All the same, the Sigmas have a meaning weakness at 24mm in the corners. You take to end down the Sigmas to f/11 or f/14 to get a nice image on the edges whereas the Canons were more consistent across the 24mm frame at wider apertures. Equally such it depends on your needs. Sharpness goes to the Sigma and amend operation aside from the widest angles. The Canon is improve across the frame at 24mm though information technology suffers at the long end.
  • Build quality was fine on both, I didn't detect a huge difference in IS though the Catechism may take been a flake improve.

I generally find that fifty-fifty when I use a 24-70, that I tend to default towards the 50mm range and I didn't detect the 24-70 f4 to exist any less abrupt in real world use.

I concluded up selling my 24-70 f4 IS as I picked up the fantabulous 24-70 f2.eight ii, but it was a hard decision because the f4 is an awesome all rounder travel lens. I might pick up another in a weak moment For work, I'grand a 100% even so shooter, just I like to accept quick little videos for fun and the IS was really dainty for handheld shots.

Additionally, the 24-70mm f/4L IS was more than consistent beyond the range and the frame at a wider range of apertures. The Sigmas had college central sharpness, but I would always choose the 24-70mm f/4L IS over the 24-70 part of the range.

I accept used the Catechism 24-105 f4L and Sigma 24-105 f4 Fine art and found the Sigma to exist the amend lens.  Since there isn't much difference in IQ between the two Canon lenses the aforementioned probably holds for the II version.   The Sigma lens is built similar a tank, is butter polish to operate and build quality is excellent.

Upgraded from 5dii to iv and instantly saw a need for better lenses. I had the 24-105 (showtime version) and have to admit that it spent a lot of the time on the mkii body because of its general range and reasonable results. Of course a better lens would take given me meliorate results, which is what the mkiv demanded.

I took the plunge and got the 24-seventy f/ii.viii mkii - wow, what a deviation! I'one thousand now selling the 24-105 and have no desire to attach it to the 5div ever again.  With the superior focussing of the 5div I'k now getting a huge per centum increase of usable shots despite no prototype stabilisation. IS is not generally not actually required on such a lens unless you lot shoot video. Also, I'yard not missing the 105mm as the 24-lxx is so good that I cropping in is e'er an choice.  I know it's in a dissimilar toll bracket, but it is in a dissimilar league.
