Tips for Knitting Socks
Most socks are knit on double pointed needles (dpn's) or on one circular needle using the magic loop method. You can also use two circular needles to knit socks, so experiment with the different methods to see which one works best for you. I found that the magic loop method was my favorite after I got the hang of it.
Be sure to start with a simple pattern if you are new to sock knitting, preferably one that is made for beginners, for your first pair. Then you can branch out into ones that use more than just a simple knit stitch and purl stitch.
Finally, make sure you knit a gauge swatch. I know, I know – we all hate to! But, for something that has to fit like a pair of socks, you need to know how many stitches you are getting per inch.
Best Yarns for Handknit Socks
Most people prefer to knit socks with wool for comfy, durable wool socks. Wool is elastic and holds up well, and is an even better choice when blended with a bit of nylon.
You want to make sure, however, that the yarn you choose is machine washable, because I don't know too many people who like to wash their socks by hand!! A good superwash wool is a perfect choice. You can easily find yarns made for socks that have the right fiber combo and are machine washable.
If you are allergic to wool, another great option is cotton, although it is not as elastic as wool. There are still some great blends out there, though, that will work for socks, so test some out to see which ones you like.

Common Questions about Knit Sock Patterns
Is it easy to knit socks?
Knitting socks is really not that much harder than any circular knitting. A lot of people are afriad of the heel shaping (gusset), but it's really not that hard and there are a lot of options out there for it – so go experiment and find the one that works best for you!
What is "second sock syndrome"?
This is a phenomenon experienced by nearly every sock knitter at one point or another. It is when you finish the first sock and then lack motivation to get the second sock done. Maybe you never cast it on…. or you find it goes muuuuch slower than the first… or maybe it never gets finished. Whatever it is, it's a real thing!
Are hand knit socks worth it?
Absolutely! Hand knit socks are great small projects that can build your skills, and they make wonderful gifts. They are very comfortable and you will find once you make one pair you can't stop!
Can you knit socks on 2 straight needles?
